The largest sectors in the city are advanced engineering and manufacturing, construction, agri tech, food and drink, digital, IT and creative, logistics, energy and environment and financial services. Peterborough, which is proud of its multicultural and diverse community of residents is now one of the fastest growing cities within the UK with over one hundred and forty different languages spoken, the economy now tells a very different story. New industries were appearing such as engineering, iron, elastic webbing and especially brick making and the city was the UK’s leading brick maker for much of the following century. However, the nineteenth century brought the Industrial Revolution and the railway to Peterborough around 1845 and an increase in population. By the eighteenth century, despite having become a city, it was in fact, the smallest city in England at the time.
